Weekly Reflection 9

This week’s class topic is ‘Innovation in Education’. Describe the SD#5 Design Lab. How does it fit in with ‘Innovation in Education’? What stood out to you? Which activities did you choose to do? How do you envision using this space with a class? What sort of project would you choose to do?

The SD5 Design Lab is beneficial to student learning with the new technology, there are many ways that this lab fits in with ‘Innovation in Education. First of all this lab uses project based learning to help students excel in technology. Not only are students taught to program robots, but learn how to code javascript as well as python coding which can be extremely hard to excel in. I believe by teaching our new generation these skills it can become second nature within the up-coming generations. This lab also introduced game-like elements into the learning process to make it more engaging and interactive. This lab helped students create new objects using a 3-D printer as well as laser printer, these can be amazing tools as they can create interactive tools, as well as objects students are able to incorporate into their own lives. In a sense it seems like computer engineering, I am in a sense jealous I was unable to learn these things while I grew up within the SD5 district. But this programs is not only to teach students, but teachers as well! Lastly, virtual and augmented reality was my personal favourite, students are able to explore a whole new realm, this can also be an amazing tool for virtual field-trips or experiencing whole out of this world experiences.
