Hooks, Knot tying, & rigging
In this weeks section of my Free Inquiry Project we will be looking at hooks, knot tying, and rigging which are all very important steps in becoming a fisherman. By obtaining these skills you are halfway on your learning journey. These skills can be crucial while fishing, and can also impress your buddies as a first time fisherman!
Hooks: The type of hook you will use depends on many relying factors, these can be the species of fish, as well as the technique you plan on executing. Generally when fishing you use larger stronger hooks for big fish, and smaller hooks for little fish. But when fly fishing you can use a small hook to bring in a large fish. If you are unsure of what type of hook you should be using there are many different resources online that can help you with hook sizes regarding the species you are targeting. Finding others who enjoy fishing as well can help you broaden your understanding, and you can teach each other new skills.

Hooks have 5 different hook point types.
- Needle
- Spear
- Rolled In
- Hollow
- Knife Edge
Knot Tying: Knots are the most important thing to master while fishing. If you are unable to the a good knot you will be unable to reel in a fish effectively. The only thing holding that fish onto your line is the strong knot you have tied on. Therefore, here are a couple knots that you should absolutely master. By the way...ALWAYS CHECK YOUR KNOTS!!
Properly learning to rig a hook to a fishing line has been the first step, now let's learn about some other tackle you are able to rig to your fishing line. Weights: By adding weights to your line you are able to change the depth of your line and lure. By adding weight approximately 2-10 inches above your lure it can help you target fish at different depths, or help you sink a light lure. Flashers: By adding large flashers to your fishing line, you are able lure in fish with the waves of light in their direction. The light imitates the fish’s prey or another fish, and can be extremely effective in different lakes. Bobbers: By adding a Bobber to your line you are able to suspend your hook/ lure in the water. Since fish near the evening tend to watch the waters surface for fly hatches, having food right infant of them can be irritable. Live bait works amazingly on bobbers, I personally love using grasshoppers since they move a lot on the waters surface.
